The size and changes of air cargo markets are determined by (changing) global supply and demand patterns. For certain markets there are more air cargo exports than imports, and vice versa. For network planning, it is crucial to know about imbalances on individual lanes. The chart below provides a high-level overview of imbalances on a regional level. North America and Middle East & South Asia experienced the largest imbalance in 2023. For North America, the imbalance increased even with 4 percentage points: outbound represented 41% of total air cargo business in 2022, and this dropped to 37% in 2023.
