Following yesterday’s closing ceremony of the Summer Olympics in Paris, WorldACD looked at some data for the top 10 countries in terms of medals (and air cargo). USA won most medals (126), followed by China (91). However, ranking countries by medal counts favours countries with large populations. When adjusted for population size, the ranking changes significantly, as shown in the chart below, with Australia and the Netherlands coming out on top. In fact, Grenada with two bronze medals and a population of 56,000 is 1st in the medals-per-capita ranking. Interestingly, when we bring air cargo in the mix, we see that 8 of the 10 largest countries in terms of air cargo are among the top 10 countries with Olympic medals: only Hong Kong and India are missing (ranking 3rd and 4th in air cargo), but with France and Australia included (ranking 16th and 17th in air cargo).
