How much of global air cargo is directly impacted by the war in Iran?

To assess the impact on supply chains, we looked at the air cargo flows most directly affected by airspace closures and reduced flight activity in the Middle East. Our air cargo market database shows that 21% of worldwide air cargo flows are directly impacted.

The chart below breaks this down as a share of global air cargo volumes (by weight):

  • Within the Middle East: 0,4%
  • From the Middle East: 2,2%
  • To the Middle East: 8,8%
  • Via the Middle East: 9,5%

Cargo flows via the Middle East include major trade lanes such as Asia Pacific and South Asia to Europe and Africa. In addition, other routes that rely on Middle Eastern airspace, such as South Asia–Europe, are also affected.

As a result, the overall impact on global air cargo is likely to be significantly larger than the 21% of worldwide flows that normally touch down in the Middle East.
