]]>According to the latest figures and analysis by WorldACD Market data, average spot rates from Asia Pacific origins rose to $4.86 per kilo in week 49 (2 to 8 December), thanks to that +8% week-on-week (WoW) increase, taking them +19% above their levels in the same week last year. Spot rates from Africa origins also rose by +12%, WoW, partly in response to a surge in traffic to European markets, based on the more than 450,000 weekly transactions covered by WorldACD’s data. And there was a further +3% increase from Europe origins to $2.93 per kilo, boosted by a +4% WoW increase from Europe origins to North America, taking average rates to $3.97 per kilo on that westbound transatlantic lane.

]]>“The region’s strong contribution this year means Asia Pacific’s share of worldwide outbound tonnages overall has risen two percentage points to 41 percent from 39 percent last year, well ahead of Europe on 24 percent, Central & South America on 14 percent, Middle East & South Asia (MESA) with nine percent and North America’s eight percent market share. Africa’s share of both outbound and inbound air cargo traffic remained stable at four percent, based on the more than two million monthly transactions covered by WorldACD’s database,” says an official release.
Europe came in as the second origin region accounting for 17 percent of global tonnage growth in 2024, the update added. “The buoyant MESA region contributed 14 percent of outbound tonnage growth this year, despite its smaller nine percent share of global volumes, bolstered by traffic shifting to air this year due to continuing disruptions to the region’s ocean freight markets.”

]]>The region’s robust performance has elevated its share of global outbound air cargo to 41%, up from 39% in 2023. This dominance places it well ahead of other regions:
Within Asia Pacific’s contribution, general cargo played a pivotal role, making up 64% of the region’s growth. This category was largely boosted by consolidated e-commerce traffic. Special cargo, which accounted for 36%, was primarily driven by the vulnerables/high-tech segment, contributing 80% of special cargo growth.

]]>According to the latest weekly figures and analysis by WorldACD Market Data, average spot rates from Europe origins rose by a further +10% in week 46 (11 to 17 November), week on week (WoW), to US $2.71 per kilo. That’s +23% higher than this time last year. Average spot rates ex-Asia Pacific were flat in week 46 compared with the previous week at $4.39 a kilo, although a +3% increase in tonnages ex-Asia Pacific also contributed to a +4% WoW rise in average worldwide spot rates to $3.14 per kilo. There were modest WoW spot rate increases from Central & South America (+4%) and North America (+3%) origins.
Buoyant transatlantic market
However, the biggest shifts in the last few weeks have been on the westbound transatlantic market, particularly from Europe to the USA and to South America. Europe to the USA spot rates recorded consecutive WoW increases of +16% and +17% in weeks 45 and 46, taking them to $3.34 per kilo – a rise of +48% in five weeks and +36% in only two weeks. That reflects a fall in capacity following the start of airlines’ winter schedules from 27 October, and some demand increases ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday on 28 November – but also the fact that cargo load factors on the westbound transatlantic market were already relatively high.

Asia Pacific rates rose 1%, while Africa was up 2% and Central and South America up 5%. WorldACD noted that contract rates out of Asia Pacific rose 2%.
One current hotspot is Vietnam – and it has not gone unnoticed by carriers.
A spokesperson for Qatar Airways Cargo told The Loadstar: “We certainly have seen a big demand for ecommerce from Asia and recently implemented increased capacity into markets including India, China and Vietnam… We see big potential in China, India and Vietnam due to the rising ecommerce boom.”
Lufthansa Cargo also cited Vietnam in its winter schedule, with a new flight connecting Frankfurt, Ho Chi Minh and Los Angeles with a 777F on a weekly rotation.
